The Police in Anambra said it rescued two victims of a collapsed building at Ekeoyibo Market, Amawbia, in Awka South Local Government Area of the state on Thursday.

Public Relations Officer for the police in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated this in a statement issued in Awka and made available to the media on Thursday.

Ikenga explained that the command received a distress call about the incident at the market, near the commandā€™s headquarters.

According to him, the police responded swiftly and have since taken the injured people to an undisclosed hospital for immediate medical treatment.

The statement further stated that on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Mr  Nnaghe Itam, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, led operatives to the scene for an on-the-spot assessment.

It added that the area had been cordoned off, while rescue operations were still ongoing.
