The Epe Local Government Area has issued a stern warning to residents and traders to cease indiscriminate dumping of refuse, especially during rainfall, to prevent blockage of drainages and flooding.

Ms. Surah Animashahun, Chairman of Epe Local Government Area, delivered this warning on Friday following the torrential rains on Wednesday that resulted in significant flooding in parts of Lagos.

In response to the flood, Animashaun urged residents and traders to avoid dumping refuse in drainages and to refrain from open defecation.

She warned, “Anyone caught disposing of refuse into the gutters and drainages across the local government will face the full wrath of the law.”

The council chairman also called on market leaders to initiate advocacy and enlightenment campaigns to educate their members on the consequences of blocking drainages and gutters with refuse.

Animashahun emphasized, “House-owners should educate their tenants on the importance of keeping the gutters within their environment clear to ensure the smooth flow of water.”

She reiterated her administration’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of the people and appealed to residents to help create a safe, conducive, and habitable environment by properly disposing of their waste to avoid flooding.
