The leader of the Labour Party caucus in the House of Representatives, Afam Ogene, urged party members to draw inspiration from Keir Starmer’s victory in the just concluded United Kingdom election.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that Ogene, who represents Ogbaru Federal Constituency, described the UK Labour Party’s win as a tonic for LP members in Nigeria.

In a decisive political shift, Starmer triumphed over former British PM Rishi Sunak, securing a significant victory that signals a change in the UK’s leadership.

UK’s LP secured 412 votes while the incumbent Conservatives garnered 121 votes during the just concluded poll.

Starmer’s win may be seen as reflecting a public desire for new direction and policies, while Sunak’s defeat marks a setback for the Conservatives.

A win for lovers of democracy

In a statement issued on Friday, July 05, Ogene said that the election portrays a flicker of hope for for the opposition and speaks of the competence and integrity of the electoral process in the UK.

He added that Starmer’s victory was not only a win for the opposition party in Britain but that of all believers in democracy, transparency and integrity.

His words, “There was no judicial ambush, as immediate transition took place to the admiration of all lovers of democracy and free and fair elections.

“If we must practice democracy, we must also love, copy and abide by the transparency and accountability of democratic institutions in nations that allow the rule of law and democratic principles to thrive.

“I urge the Nigerian Labour Party to draw inspiration from our British counterparts, close ranks, rally the people, and prepare to take the reins of power in 2027,” he said.
