NDA unveils monument of first female Major General

The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, honoured and unveiled the monument of the first-ever female Major General in the Nigerian Army, the late Major General. Aderonke Kale.

The commandant of NDA, Major General John Ochai, at the unveiling ceremony at the female cadets’ lines of NDA, Afaka, Kaduna State said the academy would continue to accord priority to gender equality.

Kale was the first female Nigerian to attain the rank of a Major General in the Army and the pioneer female medical corps commander in the Nigerian Army.

She died in November 2023 at the age of 83 in London.

Nigerian Armed Forces open to inclusivity

Addressing participants at a lecture held in honour of Kale, the NDA commandant said the Armed Forces of Nigeria have a litany of set skills that women across the country can participate in, including combat operations.

Ochai said that the NDA would continue to guarantee equality and inclusiveness to all Nigerians, irrespective of gender, race or religion.

In his address, Abimbola Amusu – Nigeria’s second female to attain the rank of a Major General – described Kale as a trailblazer who broke the jinx against all odds.

Amusu, who was the Special Guest of Honour, advised female cadets and officers to remain committed, resolute and leverage the available opportunities and training for their career progression.
