The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party has taken to his X account to mourn the passing of Ekene Adams, a member of the House of Representatives.
Adams, died in the early hours of Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at the age of 39, the spokesperson for the House of Representatives, Akin Rotimi, said in a statement.
A first-time member of the Green Chamber, Ekene Adams served as the chairman of the House Committee on Sports.
Describing the late lawmaker as “a kind and gentle humanitarian, loved by all who knew him”, Mr Rotimi said Mr Adams’ dedication to the development of grassroots sports in Nigeria was unwavering.
He also said his contributions to the House will be deeply missed.
Peter Obi expresses sadness over Mr Adams’ death
However, continuing in his post, Mr Obi expressed sadness over the news of Mr Adams’ passing.
The 2023 LP’s presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra State said, “I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Mr Ekene Adams, a member of the Labour Party in the House of Representatives from Kaduna State.
“My heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, family, and loved ones. His untimely death at the age of 39 is a tragic loss to the nation.
“As Chairman of the House Committee on Sports and Representative of the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency, Adams has made significant contributions to the development of sports in Nigeria.
“His passion and expertise in this field will be greatly missed,” Mr Obi said.
He also prayed for the repose of the soul of the late lawmaker while asking God to grant his family and members of the party the fortitude to bear this loss.
Mr Adams passing comes barely six days after the death of Olaide Akinremi, a lawmaker who represented Ibadan North Federal Constituency under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Akinremi popularly known as Jagaban served as the Chairman of the House Committee on Science Research Institutions. He was aged 51.
