Reps reviewing supplementary appropriation bill: Deputy Spokesman

Rep. Philip Agbese, the Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, assured Nigerians on Friday that the House is diligently reviewing the 2024 supplementary budget bill submitted by President Bola Tinubu.

According to reports, the President’s request is in accordance with Section 58, sub-section two of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended.

Agbese emphasized the House’s commitment to ensuring that the supplementary budget serves the best interests of Nigerians.

The ₦6.2 trillion 2024 supplementary budget aims to fund critical infrastructure projects, education, healthcare access, and public welfare initiatives. It includes ₦3.2 trillion for Renewed Hope infrastructure projects and other critical infrastructure across the country, and ₦3 trillion for recurrent expenditure necessary for the proper operation of the Federal Government.

“The House will scrutinize every bit of the budget to ensure every kobo is well utilized and that the budget is in the best interest of Nigerians. We owe it to them to ensure their resources are utilized efficiently,” Agbese said.

He highlighted that the House would engage with stakeholders, conduct public hearings, and thoroughly examine the bill to guarantee transparency and accountability.

“We will not compromise on our commitment to transparency and accountability,” Agbese added. “The House is confident that the end result will be a budget that benefits all Nigerians.”

He further explained that the House would work closely with the Senate to ensure the swift passage of the bill.

“We have a good working relationship with the Senate, and we are confident that we can work together to pass the supplementary budget in a timely manner. We will ensure the budget is passed with the necessary scrutiny and oversight,” he said.

Agbese emphasized the focus on critical infrastructure projects that will impact the lives of Nigerians, including roads, bridges, healthcare facilities, education, and public welfare initiatives.

“We want to ensure that the budget is inclusive and benefits all Nigerians, regardless of their location or socio-economic status,” he noted.

He reiterated that the House will take its time to ensure the supplementary budget is passed with thorough scrutiny and oversight.

Agbese also acknowledged Rep. Abubakar Bichi, Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, for changing the dynamics in the country’s budgetary process.
