The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the death of three site workers following a building collapse at Arowojobe Estate in the Maryland area of Lagos.
The agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, provided details in a statement released to newsmen.
The incident occurred at No. 13 Wilson Mba Street, Arowojobe Estate, Maryland.
“The three deceased were site workers,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
He explained that LASEMA received a distress call about the collapsed building around 3:49 a.m., prompting the immediate activation of the agency’s response team, which arrived at the scene by 3:58 a.m.
“It was discovered that a set of three terraces under construction had collapsed,” he said.
Search and rescue operations commenced immediately, resulting in the recovery of three deceased adult males, the rescue of two adult males alive, and the rescue of another adult male trapped under the rubble.
Oke-Osanyintolu noted that the rescue efforts were carried out by LASEMA and the Lagos State Fire Service.
“All six men were site workers,” he added. “They are receiving pre-hospital care on location, while the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit has been contacted to handle the remains of the three fatalities.”
A combined team of agency personnel, fire service, and Nigeria Police are currently working at the scene. LASEMA’s excavator has been deployed to expedite the search and rescue operations.
