Dr Yusuf Suberu, Squadron Leader of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) Mayors of the Federation, has urged the public to actively participate in enhancing traffic safety within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In an interview with the newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja, Suberu emphasized that a multifaceted approach combining enforcement, education, and engineering is essential to decrease road accidents in the FCT. He highlighted the necessity of collaborative efforts among stakeholders.

“Enforcement of traffic laws, regular vehicle inspections, and public awareness campaigns are crucial,” Suberu stated. “However, enforcement alone cannot solve the problem of road crashes. We also need to educate drivers and pedestrians on traffic rules and safety measures. The FCT can achieve a significant reduction in road crashes by implementing these measures.”

Suberu stressed the importance of data analysis to identify crash hotspots and develop targeted interventions. He also emphasized the need for improved road infrastructure, including better road markings, signage, and lighting.

He announced plans to collaborate with other road safety agencies to establish a unified traffic management system. “We have increased inspections, leading to a significant reduction in road crashes involving commercial vehicles. But we are not resting on our oars as we will do more to ensure that the FCT is free of RTCs. The FCT deserves a world-class traffic management system. We will work towards achieving this goal,” Suberu said.

Suberu commended the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike, for their efforts in curbing Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs) in the territory. He appealed to drivers and motorists to strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations to ensure safety on the highways.
