Labour unions in Kwara State have commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for the formation and inauguration of the state’s tripartite committee tasked with the consequential adjustment of the new minimum wage.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Joint Negotiation Council (JNC) expressed their appreciation in a joint statement released on Thursday in Ilorin. The unions lauded AbdulRazaq for being the first governor to inaugurate such a committee, setting a precedent for other states.

In the statement, NLC Chairman Muritala Olayinka, TUC counterpart Abdulrahman Onikijipa, and JNC leader Saliu Suleiman pledged the unions’ commitment to the assignment. They also expressed gratitude to Governor AbdulRazaq for his continued support, assuring him that the unions would reciprocate his dedication to the welfare of workers in the state.

“We assure the state government and His Excellency of our unwavering commitment to this important task,” the labour leaders stated.

This move follows President Bola Tinubu’s recent assent to the new minimum wage bill, which mandates immediate implementation across the country for both public and private sectors. The bill, passed by the National Assembly, requires state governors and the organized private sector to adjust the monthly salaries of their workers accordingly.
