The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has initiated an investigation into a viral video showing a female traveller tearing a Nigerian Standard Passport at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

NIS spokesperson, Kenneth Udo, confirmed the investigation in a statement on Monday in Abuja, stating that the individual involved has been identified and summoned for further questioning.

“If the allegations are confirmed, the individual’s actions would be in violation of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended),” Udo said. He added that the penalties for such an offence are outlined under Section 10(h) of the same Act.

Udo emphasized the NIS’s commitment to enforcing the Immigration Act in order to safeguard national security and uphold the dignity and integrity of the nation’s legal documents.

According to reports anyone found guilty under this section of the law could face a maximum of 10 years imprisonment and/or a fine.
