Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Austin Eguavoen, has refuted claims that he stepped down as interim coach of the Super Eagles following the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

Eguavoen was appointed to lead the team in the qualifiers after the NFF was unable to finalise a deal with German coach Bruno Labbadia due to what the federation described as “stringent German tax laws.”

He has so far guided Nigeria to a 3-0 victory over Benin Republic in Uyo before the Super Eagles were held to a goalless draw against Rwanda in Kigali.

Following the draw in Kigali, unconfirmed reports surfaced suggesting that Eguavoen had resigned from his interim role.

However, he has dismissed these rumors during a media chat upon his arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

“It’s quite unfortunate that people just trigger something that is not correct. I’m still very much in charge,” Eguavoen said.

He, therefore, clarified that he merely intended to discuss the next steps with the NFF leadership but had no plans to step down.

Eguavoen will continue to oversee the Super Eagles as they prepare for their upcoming AFCON qualifiers against Libya next month.
