The police command in Ogun has arrested a 33-year-old suspect over alleged armed robbery and rape.

A statement by the commandā€™s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, on Monday in Abeokuta, said the suspect was arrested at Ijaguh, Ijebu Ode on Sunday.

She said the suspect, who had been on the commandā€™s wanted list for sometime, was apprehended by a police team from the Igbeba Division, following a tip-off.

ā€œThe suspect was spotted in Ijagun attempting to blend with the crowd, but his true identity was verified through intelligence sources.

ā€œThe police were promptly informed and he was arrested and identified as the main suspect in a reported incident of armed robbery and rape that took place on July 21.

ā€œDuring this crime, he and his accomplices unlawfully entered a female hostel, Royal Villa at the Tai Solarin University of Education in Ijagun.

ā€œThey stole valuable educational items such as laptops, iPhones, sports watches, and cash from female students, and also committed sexual assault before fleeing the scene,ā€ she said.

Ms Odutola said that preliminary investigation had commenced while the suspect had been taken into custody at the Igbeba police station for interrogation.

She said that the suspect would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for thorough investigation and prosecution.

Ms Odutola further said that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Abiodun Alamutu, had tasked detectives in the command to work assiduously to arrest the suspectā€™s accomplices.

Mr Alamutu appealed to residents of Ijagun to provide credible information to help the police arrest the other fleeing criminals.
