The United Nations Childrenās Fund (UNICEF) says 75 per cent of the new HIV infections among adolescents globally occurred in girls.
Celine Lafoucriere, Chief of the UNICEF Field Office for South-West Nigeria, said this in statement on Friday to commemorate the International Day of the girl-child.
On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 declaring October 11 as the International Day of the girl-child.
Ms Lafoucriere described this yearās theme āGirlsā Vision for the Futureā as appropriate.
āGlobally, 75 per cent of new HIV infections among adolescents occur in girls, further exacerbating the health risks they face.
āIn addition, one in three adolescent girls suffers from anaemia, a severe form of malnutrition,ā she said.
She noted that too many girl-child were confronted by extreme challenges that deny them their rights, restrict their choices and limit their futures.
Ms Lafoucriere said that being a girl should not determine what you can do, where you can go, or who you can become.
She also said that almost double the number of adolescent girls (one in four) compared to boys were not in any form of education, employment or training.
Ms Lafoucriere added that nearly one in four partnered or married adolescent girls had experienced sexual or physical abuse.
āThe good news is that change is possible, however, girls alone cannot bring about the desired change.
āThey need allies who listened to and responded to their needs ā like you and me. Together, we can build a future in which every girlās rights are protected.
āEvidence shows that with the right support, resources and opportunities, the potential of girls around the world is limitless.
āWhen girls achieve their goals, we all move closer to achieving our global goals,ā she stated.
Ms Lafoucriere, however, said that findings from UNICEF analysis revealed that girls were not only courageous in the face of challenges, but hopeful for the future.
āAs you well know, Oct. 11 is a key global moment to celebrate girls and amplify their voices, actions and leadership.
āThe day also belongs to everyone who cares about girls and taking action to advocate for the full spectrum of girlsā rights,ā she said.
