Mr Christopher Maikalangu, Chairman, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), has frowned at the attitude of residents dumping refuse in drainages.

Briefing journalists after inspecting projects in some communities within the council on Wednesday, Mr Maikalangu said they would begin enforcement of punitive sanctions against defaulters.

Specifically, the AMAC boss said defaulters would be made to pay a fine to serve as a deterrent to others.

“I can’t see reasons why people bring trash from their houses to dump into the flood drains. This is wrong, and it is the cause of water overflowing onto the roads.

“These facilities are meant for people, and for proper flow of water, but people will rather drop their waste into the drains.

“We have been warning the people against it, and soon we will start imposing fines,” Mr Maikalangu said.

He urged the contractors handling the projects to urgently remove the trash from the drains to avoid causing flooding.
