Gowon @ 90: Obasanjo, Jonathan, Tinubu, others ask young Nigerians to emulate ex-head of stateĀ 

The dignitaries urged young Nigerians to emulate the former head of state in uniting the country.

Former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, Ibrahim Babangida as well as incumbent President Bola Tinubu have eulogised Yakubu Gowon in celebration of his 90th birthday.

The dignitaries, who spoke at the public lecture in commemoration of Mr Gowonā€™s birthday anniversary, urged leaders and young Nigerians to emulate the former head of state in uniting the country.

President Tinubu, at the event celebrated in Abuja on Friday, praised Mr Gowon for his remarkable achievement for Nigeria.

Mr Tinubu, who was represented by George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, said that Nigerians would not forget Mr Gowon for his indelible marks in the country.

Also, former president Obasanjo, described Mr Gowon as a ā€˜man of destinyā€™, adding that his birthday celebration was a national one, which would remain a memorial in his mind.

ā€œI thank God for giving you strength to celebrate your 90 years while you are still alive,ā€ Mr Obasanjo said.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Abubakar III, said Mr Gowonā€™s life was worthy of emulation, looking at his past contribution to the growth of Nigeria.

According to Mr Abubakar, Mr Gowon as a former head of state, had during his time as the head of government, fought hard for the unity of Nigeria.

Also, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, President, African Development Bank Group, who delivered a birthday celebration lecture on: ā€˜Building a global Nigeriaā€™ , said Mr Gowon remained the greatest father and exceptional global leader.

ā€œGown is one of Nigeriaā€™s greatest statesman, a rebirth leader, a father of the nation,ā€ Mr Adesina said, while recalling Mr Gowonā€™s achievements. 

In his response, Mr Gowon thanked all the dignitaries present and Nigerians home and abroad for celebrating with him.
