The former chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) now the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Humphrey Nwosu is dead.
Mr Nwosu, the Nation reports died at the age of 83 in a hospital in Virginia, United States of America.
Born on October 2, 1941, Mr Nwosu served as the chairman of the nation’s electoral body between 1989 and 1993. He was appointed by the then Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida.
An electoral umpire during the controversial yet described as the freest and fairest June 12, Mr Nwosu’s NEC introduced the innovative Option A4 voting system and the Open Ballot system.
During the election, the late NEC chairman was ordered by Mr Babangida’s regime to halt the announcement of the June 12 election results despite releasing many results at the time.
Recently in July 2024, the House of Representatives urged President Bola Tinubu to honour Mr Nwosu for his role in conducting what is considered the most credible election in Nigeria’s post-independence history.
The request is still pending as of the time of his passing.
