Former president Donald Trump, the Republican candidate in the 2024 United States presidential election, has defeated the Democratic candidate and current Vice President Kamala Harris in a historic comeback to the White House.

The New York Times’ election forecast estimated that the former U.S. president was “Very Likely” to win the election with an over 95 percent chance. In addition to the Electoral College vote, Mr Trump was expected to be the first Republican to win the Popular Vote in over 20 years, since George W. Bush in 2004 after 9/11.

Fox News projected that Mr Trump was winning the State of Wisconsin, bringing him to 277 Electoral Votes, and seven more over the required 270 needed to become the president-elect.

Mr Trump becomes the second president in U.S. history to serve non-consecutive terms, with Grover Cleveland being the first president to do so, having served as the 22nd and 24th president of the U.S. between 1893-1897 and 1885-1889.

In his victory speech at his campaign headquarters in West Palm Beach, Florida, Mr Trump called the win a “Magnificent victory for the American people,” and promised to fight for every American and help the country to heal from the contentious election.

Republicans are expected to take not just the Presidency and the Senate, but also maintain control of the House.
