Sarah Bhakita, Head Coach, Nigeria U19 Women’s Cricket team says the team is aiming to finish as one of the top two teams at the International Cricket Council (ICC) U19 Women’s World Cup.
Bhakita spoke on the backdrop of the team’s World Cup warm-up matches where it lost to Pakistan on Monday but defeated Scotland in the second game on Wednesday.
The World Cup is scheduled to be held in Malaysia between Jan. 18 and Feb 2.
Bhakita said that the team had prepared well to ensure a successful outing at the tournament.
“The matches have been a great morale booster for the team, especially with the win over Scotland.
“Following this momentum, we will like to go to the World Cup with confidence and ensure that we get the most wins in our games and get to the top stage which is the final.
“I believe that these girls are capable if they apply themselves well. The only thing we do right now is to encourage them to believe in themselves,” Bhakita noted.
Nigeria gained the lone slot available for Africa in the qualifiers in September 2024.
The team has since trained in High Performance Centers in Edo and Lagos before travelling to India for a training tour.
The team will begin their World Cup campaign in the 16-nation tournament against Samoa on Saturday at the Borneo Cricket Ground, Kuching, Sarawak in Malaysia.
