The Senate rejected a motion on Wednesday to immortalise the late Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, former chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), BusinessDay reports.
The motion, sponsored by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South) and backed by 15 other senators, sought to recognise Nwosu for his role in conducting the June 12, 1993, presidential election—widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most credible polls.
Citing Senate Orders 41 and 51, Abaribe highlighted Nwosu’s contributions, noting that his leadership in the electoral process led to the declaration of MKO Abiola as the presumed winner and the eventual recognition of June 12 as Democracy Day.
