YouTube Music has increased its monthly subscription fee for its premium individual plan category to ₦1,300 from ₦900, while its premium family plan has risen to ₦2,000 from ₦1,400.

The company disclosed this in an email to subscribers, stating, “To continue delivering great service and features, we’re increasing your price to NGN 1,300.00/month. We don’t make these decisions lightly, but this update will allow us to continue to improve Music Premium and support the artists you listen to.”

This is YouTube Music’s first price increase in Nigeria since 2020, according to BusinessDay.

The price adjustment follows a recent hike in South Africa, where YouTube Music raised its individual plan by 8 per cent from R59.99 to R64.99, and its family plans increased by 11 per cent to R99.99 from R89.99.

“We don’t make these decisions lightly, but this update will allow us to continue to improve Premium and support the creators and artists you watch on YouTube,” the company said.

YouTube Music’s Nigeria increase comes on the heels of Spotify’s 2024 increase, which raised its subscription fee to ₦1,300/month from ₦900. This follows a trend of subscription-based companies raising monthly subscription rates following the steep decline of the naira.

Top technology firms such as Netflix, Google, DSTV, GOtv, and Microsoft have raised their subscription prices in Nigeria due to rising inflation (23.18 per cent in February 2025) and the naira’s decline.

Since the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) unified the foreign exchange market in 2023, the naira has weakened, falling from ₦471/$ before the move to ₦1,567.02 by April 3, 2025.
