The rumour report circulating on the social media, claiming that Fulani herdsmen had attacked the Owerri Correctional Facility on 10th April 2025 and freed inmates, has been dismissed by the police in Imo State. The command categorically has stated that the report is completely false.

In a statement released by Henry Okoye, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), through a Police/Media Forum, said that “there has been no prison break, no attack, and no security breach in Imo State. The Owerri Correctional Facility remains secure, with police working alongside other security agencies to maintain peace and order across the state.”

Consequently, he has enjoined the public to disregard this fake news entirely and refrain from sharing or promoting such unfounded claims, BusinessDay reports.

“This misleading report is a deliberate attempt to incite panic, provoke ethnic tension, and mislead the public. The Command strongly condemns the spreading of such misinformation,” he said.

“The Command has initiated a thorough investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for initiating and spreading this false report. Legal action will be taken against anyone found guilty of inciting panic through the dissemination of such misleading content,” Okoye informed.

He further said that the Imo State Police Command in synergy with other security agencies has remained fully committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents.

He further advised that for accurate and timely security updates, the public is advised to rely solely on verified information from the police and other responsible authorities.
