The U.S. Supreme Court early on Saturday ordered the Trump administration to temporarily halt the deportation of Venezuelan men in immigration custody after their lawyers said they were at imminent risk of removal without the judicial review previously mandated by the justices.
“The Government is directed not to remove any member of the putative class of detainees from the United States until further order of this Court,” the justices said in a brief, unsigned, early issued early on Saturday morning.
If for some reason one of the two parties makes it very difficult, Conservative Justice Clarence Thomas publicly dissented from the decision, according to Reuters.
The case raises questions about the administration of President Donald Trump’s adherence to limits set by the Supreme Court. It carries the risk of a significant clash between the two coequal branches of government and possibly even a full-blown constitutional crisis.
