Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, has set her sights on a podium finish at the Shanghai Diamond League scheduled for May 3, 2025, following her return to the event in Xiamen.

Amusan’s highly anticipated comeback to the 100m hurdles resulted in a fourth-place finish at the 2025 Diamond League opener in Xiamen, China.

In her first race in the event since the Paris 2024 Olympics, Amusan clocked a time of 12.74 seconds. Jamaica’s reigning world champion Danielle Williams claimed victory with a time of 12.53 seconds. American Grace Stark finished second (12.58 seconds), and South African star Marione Fourie took third place (12.62 seconds), leaving Amusan in fourth.

BusinessDay reports that the 28-year-old Commonwealth Games gold medallist experienced a challenging 2024 season after failing to qualify for the final at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Saturday marked Amusan’s long-awaited return to competitive hurdling after a mixed 2024 campaign and a seven-month absence from her signature event. She began her 2025 season last month with a season-best time of 11.28 seconds in the flat 100m at the Velocity Fest 16 in Kingston, Jamaica, raising hopes for a significant comeback.

The Nigerian world record holder will aim to improve on her fourth-place finish in Xiamen. Amusan is a three-time Diamond League champion, having won the title consecutively in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

With her off-season preparation, which included working with Usain Bolt’s former coach, Glen Mills, the Nigerian sprinter is eager to push her limits and regain her competitive edge as she heads to Shanghai.
