Eight members of Nigeria’s House of Representatives on Tuesday announced their defection from their respective political parties, marking a fresh wave of defections in the Green chamber.
Two lawmakers from the Labour Party (LP) defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while six PDP members crossed over to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The notices of defection were conveyed through separate letters read by Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the House at the resumption of plenary on Tuesday.
According to BusinessDay, the defectors are as follows: Obetta Chidi, member representing Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South constituency in the 10th National Assembly, moved from the LP to the PDP.
Dennis Agbo, member representing Igbo-Eze North/Udenu constituency, also defected from the LP to the PDP.
Victor Nwokolo, a fourth-term member representing Ika North East/Ika South Federal Constituency of Delta State, left the PDP for the APC.
Pondi Julius Gbabojor, a third-term member representing Burutu Federal Constituency of Delta State, defected from the PDP to the APC.
Thomas Ereyitomi, representing Warri North/Warri South/Warri West constituency, also moved from the PDP to the APC.
Mutu Nicholas Ebomo, a seven-term member of the House of Representatives since 1999, defected from the PDP to the APC.
Ukodhiko Jonathan, representing Isoko North/Isoko South constituency, left the PDP for the APC.
Ezechi Nnamdi, a first-term member representing Ndokwa East/Ndokwa West/Ukwuani Federal Constituency of Delta State, also crossed from the PDP to the APC.
In their respective letters, the lawmakers cited internal crises and unresolved divisions within their parties as the primary reasons for their defections. According to them, the lingering instability threatens their ability to deliver on their mandates, with their constituents reportedly in support of the moves.
This latest round of defections comes amid an ongoing trend in the House of Representatives, where multiple lawmakers, particularly from the PDP and LP, have shifted allegiance to the APC in recent months.
