A heavy rain accompanied by a windstorm disrupted sporting events and business activities at the ongoing 2025 National Sports Festival (NSF), tagged Gateway Games, at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta and Ikenne, Ogun State.

The storm forced a suspension of the basketball game between Team Rivers and Team Jigawa for an extended period. Similarly, the football match between Team Ebonyi and Team Borno faced delays due to adverse weather conditions.

The windstorm also wreaked havoc on the stands of several food vendors and traders at the venue. Affected vendors began repairs almost immediately in hopes of resuming business.

One of the affected traders, Bolaji Adetunji, described the incident as a natural occurrence and expressed gratitude that no lives were lost. “It’s a setback, but we thank God for safety. There’s no need to blame anyone,” she said.

Another vendor, Mutiat Alabi, appealed to organisers to provide more durable infrastructure in the future.

“The wind was strong, and some stalls weren’t sturdy enough. I suggest the event be held during the dry season or provide a larger canopy for better protection,” Alabi said.

Despite the setback, she expressed satisfaction with sales since the start of the festival.

The incident highlights the need for improved planning around weather conditions at major sporting events to ensure the safety and comfort of athletes, spectators, and vendors.
