The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has launched a manhunt after seven inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa, Osun State, following a torrential rainfall that compromised the facility’s security infrastructure.
The Service confirmed the incident, describing the breach as a “force majeure” that occurred on Tuesday during an intense downpour.
The heavy rainfall reportedly damaged part of the facility’s perimeter, creating an opportunity for the inmates to flee, BusinessDay reports.
In response, Sylvester Ndidi, the Controller General of Corrections, Nwakuche, ordered an immediate investigation to unravel the circumstances that enabled the escape. He also directed that all necessary resources be deployed to recapture the fleeing inmates.
According to a statement issued by Umar Abubakar, Public Relations Officer, the NCoS has activated emergency protocols and is working in collaboration with sister security agencies and community leaders to track down and return the escapees to custody.
The statement emphasised that while operational strategies are being implemented to address the breach, the support and vigilance of the public remain vital to the recapture efforts.
“The Service urges members of the public to assist by providing credible information that may lead to the arrest of the escapees,” NCoS stated.
The Service added that anyone with useful information should contact the nearest security agency or reach the NCoS Response Desk through any of the following phone lines: 07087086005, 09060004598, or 08075050006.
According to BusinessDay, observers noted that this incident highlights growing concerns over the vulnerability of correctional facilities across the country, especially during extreme weather conditions.
The NCoS assures the public of its commitment to maintaining order and ensuring the safe return of all escapees.
