The Israeli military said Monday that Iran’s retaliatory attack on U.S. military bases proved that the country was a threat to “the entire world” while Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday slammed attacks on Iran as “unprovoked” and “unjustified” in a meeting with Tehran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Putin, however, did not announce any concrete support to his key ally in the Middle East. Moscow is a crucial backer of Iran but has not swung forcefully behind its partner even as the United States launched strikes on its nuclear facilities over the weekend.
Israel’s comments, on the other hand, came after Iran launched missiles at U.S. military bases in Qatar and Iraq on Monday evening, official media reported, in what state TV called a “powerful” response to recent American strikes on key nuclear sites.
“The operation of Iranian missiles against American bases located in Qatar and in Iraq has begun, and is called ‘Blessing of Victory’,” the official press agency IRNA said. AFP journalists reported hearing explosions in Doha, the capital of Qatar, home to the largest U.S. base in the region.
Meanwhile, Qatar said it had successfully intercepted an Iranian missile attack Monday on the United States’ Al Udeid base, the largest U.S. military facility in the Middle East.
