Nigerian music executive and talent manager, Ubi Franklin, has revealed that female artistes signed under his label are required to agree to a no-pregnancy clause in their contracts, stating that having a child during the duration of a deal could derail their careers and put investor funds at risk.

Speaking on the Culture Sonic podcast, Franklin explained that the entertainment business demands huge financial input, especially when launching new talent, and that an unexpected pregnancy could interrupt the momentum needed to break into the industry.

He said, ”If I’m signing a female artiste, I always put it in the contract that for the duration of the contract, you will not get pregnant.

“This is a freaking business. We should stop making it look like you see an artist playing, because you are on social media you can interact with the artist.

“Right now to break an artist, N150 million, you have not started.

“Sometimes you can spend N300 million on an artist and the artist haven’t sing like A.”

Franklin clarified that he is not against female artistes becoming mothers but stressed the importance of building a strong professional foundation first.

“Just imagine you have an artist that you have invested in, and she gets pregnant. That is over.

“It will be a lot for the artist to come back.

“Tell me any artist, any female artist in our industry who has had a baby.

“Who had not built a proper career and then went to have a baby, and then. It is not easy.

“I’m not saying they can’t have children, but the thing is, while you have it. Build a strong career,” Franklin urged.
