Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called for calm and unity Sunday after federal forces reportedly killed cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes popularly known as El-Mencho.

This operation, authorities say, has triggered roadblocks, flight disruptions, and scattered violence across parts of Mexico.

In a late Sunday night statement addressing the developing security situation, Sheinbaum emphasised coordination among security agencies and urged the public to remain informed.

“The Secretariat of National Defense reported on the operation carried out this morning by federal forces, which resulted in various blockades and other reactions.”

She added that security authorities were maintaining communication across jurisdictions.

“There is absolute coordination with the governments of all states; we must remain informed and calm.

“The social media accounts of the Security Cabinet provide permanent updates,” she wrote.

She also noted that daily activities were largely continuing across the country despite localised disruptions.

The president added, “In the vast majority of the national territory, activities are proceeding with complete normality.”

Concluding her message, the president expressed recognition for Mexico’s security institutions.

“My recognition to the Mexican Army, National Guard, Armed Forces, and Security Cabinet. We work every day for peace, security, justice, and the well-being of Mexico,” the release concluded.

The president’s message came as authorities monitored security developments following the reported death of El-Mencho, the powerful leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of the most influential criminal groups in the region.

The presidential statement comes amid a wider climate of security concern across North America following several high-profile violence incidents.

Security operations in Mexico escalated after reports that soldiers killed El-Mencho, the alleged head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, a group widely considered among the most powerful drug trafficking organisations in the region.

The operation reportedly triggered retaliatory unrest, including transportation disruptions, suspended sporting events such as matches in Mexico’s professional football league and an international friendly, and airline cancellations at airports in Guadalajara International Airport and Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport.

The United States and Canada have issued travel advisories urging citizens in parts of Mexico to shelter in place due to roadblocks, security operations, and criminal activity, reflecting the cross-border implications of cartel violence.
