Airtel Nigeria, one of Nigeria’s leading telecommunications companies, has announced plans to shift towards solar energy to power its telecom infrastructure in response to skyrocketing diesel costs.

The company revealed that its fuel expenses have surged to N28 billion due to the rising cost of diesel, a major factor driving its decision to explore renewable energy options.

During a media roundtable in Lagos, the Director of Corporate Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility highlighted the company’s strategy to reduce operational costs while enhancing sustainability.

The move comes as Nigeria continues to grapple with persistent energy challenges that have heavily impacted industries reliant on diesel-powered generators.

Airtel Nigeria’s Chief Technical Officer, Harmanpreet Dhillon, stated that the telecom giant is exploring solar power as a key alternative energy source.

This transition, Mr Dhillon said, aims to mitigate the impact of Nigeria’s unreliable electricity supply, which has forced telecom operators to depend largely on diesel generators to maintain operations.

By investing in solar energy, Airtel Nigeria seeks to create a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution to its energy needs, reflecting a growing trend among companies in the region to embrace renewable energy for long-term sustainability.
