Tinubu interested in Southeast development: Former lawmaker

The South East Development Commission Bill will receive funding from the federation account for the development of the Southeast region.

A former member of the House of Representatives, Sam Onuigbo, has said that President Bola Tinubu is interested in the development process of the Southeast region.

Mr Onuigbo in a statement issued on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, said that the president has over time shown his committed to the establishment of the Southeast Development Commission (SEDC) bill.

The former lawmaker also commended the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu and other parliamentarians from the Southeast region for ensuring that the bill was passed.

Mr Onuigbo’s commendation comes on the heels of the passage of the SEDC bill by the president.

Assuring that the commission would oversee the holistic growth and development of the region, Mr Onuigbo said this move represents a genuine commitment towards addressing not only the insecurity in the region but also the infrastructure decay which had plagued the Southeast.

He commended Mr Kalu for his exemplary leadership and unparalleled commitment towards the development of the Southeast.

According to him, the action by the Deputy Speaker first manifested in the inauguration and implementation of the Peace in the Southeast Project (PISE-P).

Mr Onuigbo also commended Tinubu for showing commitment to a united and prosperous Nigeria where no region is left behind.

The SEDC Establishment Bill was co-sponsored by Kalu and other Southeast lawmakers at the House of Representatives.

This bill is expected to receive funding from the federation account for the development of the South East region.
