Works Minister David Umahi has announced that the Independence Bridge in Lagos will reopen to commuters by 3 PM on Friday.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos on Thursday evening, Umahi assured residents that repairs on the damaged section of the bridge would be completed, with follow-up inspections scheduled in two weeks.

BusinessDay reports that the bridge was closed earlier this week for maintenance and rehabilitation—a decision Umahi claimed he was unaware of. Olukorede Kesha, federal controller of works in Lagos, had previously announced the closure would last until May.

The sudden shutdown caused severe traffic congestion, with many commuters reaching their destinations in the early hours of the morning. Following public outcry over the extensive gridlock on Wednesday, Umahi ordered the bridge’s reopening, stating that necessary repairs would be completed at a later time.

Providing an update on the progress, the minister said: “Let me announce that those who are going to work tomorrow should feel free by 3 pm to pass through here. This bridge will be reopened at the latest by 3 pm tomorrow to the glory of God, and so we are committed to working throughout the night to restore the bridge.”

He added that approximately 50 per cent of the planned work has been completed, noting that “it may turn out to be permanent work.”
