The Nigerian Army and the Republic of Burundi have pledged to deepen their military partnership to combat terrorism, violent extremism, and evolving cross-border security threats across the continent.
The agreement was reached during a courtesy visit to the Army Headquarters in Abuja by Burundi’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Edouard Nduwimana. Details of the meeting were disclosed on Thursday via a post on X by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele.
Receiving the delegation, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, highlighted the deep-rooted ties between both nations. Summarising the foundation of their diplomatic relationship, Shaibu noted:
“Nigeria and Burundi are long-standing partners bound by shared African values, mutual respect and a common commitment to continental peace and security.”
Lieutenant General Shaibu commended Burundi’s strides in national reconciliation and stability, assuring the envoy that Nigeria would expand military cooperation through enhanced training, personnel exchanges, capacity building, and strategic visits. He noted that regular military dialogue and joint security initiatives remain vital for tackling regional insecurity.
In response, Ambassador Nduwimana delivered warm wishes from Burundi’s President, General Évariste Ndayishimiye, and lauded the Nigerian Army’s counter-terrorism operations. Expressing admiration for Nigeria’s military role on the continent, the ambassador stated:
“The Nigerian Army has demonstrated professionalism and made invaluable contributions to regional peace, counter-terrorism efforts and security across Africa.”
To consolidate these defence ties, Nduwimana requested broader access for Burundian personnel to Nigerian military institutions through scholarships and specialised training. He also advocated for joint military exercises, instructor exchanges, and closer alignment on peace support operations.
