President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Team Nigeria following their strong performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, where the national contingent secured 24 medals.
Nigeria concluded its campaign in Scotland with 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze medals. In a statement issued on Tuesday by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, the President praised the athletes for flying the nation’s flag with dignity and pride, describing their success as a reflection of their resilience, discipline, and determination.
While expressing his gratitude to the broader sporting delegation, the President stated: “On behalf of the Government and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I express profound appreciation to our athletes, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel, administrators, and all those whose dedication and sacrifice made Nigeria’s participation at the Games possible.”
Tinubu added that the medals stood as “a testament to their hard work and perseverance,” noting that the valuable experience gained in Glasgow would lay the groundwork for future global successes while inspiring young Nigerians to embrace commitment and service to their country.
The President also commended the leadership of the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Olympic Committee for their dedication to sports development. Reaffirming his government’s pledge to upgrade training facilities, strengthen institutions, and expand pathways for national athletes, Tinubu pledged: “My administration remains steadfast in its resolve to invest in sports development, strengthen our sporting institutions, improve training facilities, and create greater opportunities for our talented athletes to excel on the continental and global stage.”
While the 24-medal tally marks a commendable outing, it falls slightly short of the 35 medals, 12 gold, nine silver, and 14 bronze, won at the 2022 Birmingham Games, where Nigeria topped the African standings. However, the performance mirrors the 24-medal finish at the 2018 Gold Coast Games in Australia, though remaining behind the 36-medal haul recorded when Glasgow last hosted the Games in 2014.
The president called on the athletes to stay focused and continue striving for excellence on the international stage.
