Vice President Kashim Shettima has commenced a two-week period of leave approved by President Bola Tinubu, marking his first break since taking office on 29 May 2023. He is expected to return to his official duties on or around 20 August 2026.
According to a statement released by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Shettima will use the hiatus to review government initiatives and broaden his grasp of pressing domestic and international policy issues.
Explaining the purpose of the break, Nkwocha noted: “…study, reflection and intellectual renewal as part of efforts to strengthen his capacity for continued national service.”
The statement highlighted that since assuming the vice-presidency, Shettima has overseen key government priorities in areas such as economic growth, food security, digital innovation, employment creation, and regional relations. In addition to these duties, he chairs the National Economic Council, coordinating policy discussions between state governors, the Central Bank Governor, and other senior officials.
Beyond his domestic mandate, Shettima has frequently represented President Tinubu at international gatherings. These include representing Nigeria at the G20 and AU-EU summits in November 2025, enabling the President to remain in the country during security crises in Kwara and Niger states.
Nkwocha added that the Vice President maintains an unshakeable commitment to his role and to supporting the President’s vision for a secure and prosperous nation as implementation of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda gathers pace.
