Twenty-one-year-old Ibrahim Usman has been punished with eight strokes of the cane for stealing a she-goat in the Ungwan Rimi area of Kaduna State.
The young man was convicted of the crime and sentenced to receiving eight strokes of the cane by a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday, October 10, 2024.
The convict, who admitted committing the offence, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy.
According to Mr Usman, he was misguided by his friends.
However, while delivering his judgement, the Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, said the court was merciful with the defendant because he did not waste its time in admitting his guilt.
Mr Emmanuel ordered that the convict be given eight strokes of the cane and warned him to desist from committing the crime in future.
The Magistrate also warned the convict that the court might not be this lenient the next time he appeared before him.
The court took its decision after the prosecution counsel, Inspector Chidi Leo, informed it that the convict committed the offence on October 6, 2024.
Mr Leo said the convict was apprehended by members of the vigilante group with the said she-goat at Ali Akilu Road Kaduna.
He added that when Mr Usman could not give a satisfactory explanation of how he got the goat, the vigilante members brought him to the police state.
He further confessed to stealing the goat from his neighbour’s house, an offence which contravenes the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
