Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82 in a London clinic after a prolonged battle with leukaemia, according to official statements released Sunday afternoon.
Buhari, who served as military ruler from 1983 to 1985 and later as democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, passed away around 4:30 p.m. President Bola Tinubu has directed that flags be flown at half-mast and asked Vice President Shettima to accompany his body back to Nigeria for Muslim funeral rites.
Buhari’s legacy is marked by his tough anti-corruption stance, efforts against Boko Haram, and frequent medical absences that often stirred public debate. While supporters hailed him as a principled leader, critics pointed to economic hardship and rising insecurity during his tenure. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon.
