Ilkay Gundogan has rejoined Manchester City after leaving Barcelona just a year after his departure from the English champions.

The 33-year-old midfielder previously spent seven years at City, where he won five Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, and a total of 12 major honours before moving to Barcelona in 2023.

On leaving Barcelona, Gundogan described the club as the “best in the world”.

Gundogan’s time in Spain was short-lived, as he and Barcelona reportedly agreed to terminate his contract after just one season, allowing him to make a return to the Etihad Stadium.

During his year with the Catalan giants, Gundogan scored five goals and provided 14 assists, but the team failed to secure any silverware.

Expressing his delight at rejoining City, Gundogan said in a statement, “I am incredibly happy to be back. It’s great to see my teammates, the staff, and everyone I had an amazing and successful time with over the years.

“Leaving made me appreciate this place even more. After spending a year away, I truly realise how special this club is – the best club in the world.”

Gundogan’s return to Manchester City is seen as a significant boost for the team as they continue to build on their recent successes.
