President Emmanuel Macron has addressed the recent arrest of Russian Telegram founder Pavel Durov on French soil, clarifying that the arrest is not politically motivated but a part of an ongoing judicial process.

In a post on his official X page, Mr Macron emphasised France’s commitment to freedom of expression, communication, and entrepreneurship.

He dismissed what he described as “false information” circulating about Mr Durov’s arrest, which has dominated headlines since Saturday, August 24, 2024.

“I have seen false information regarding France following the arrest of Pavel Durov.

“France is deeply committed to freedom of expression and communication, to innovation, and to the spirit of entrepreneurship. It will remain so,” Macron wrote.

The French president also noted that in a country governed by the rule of law, freedom is respected within a legal framework to protect citizens and uphold their fundamental rights, both online and offline.

He stressed that the judiciary operates independently and that Durov’s arrest was conducted as part of a judicial investigation, not a political manoeuvre.

“It is up to the judges to rule on the matter,” he added.

In response to Mr Macron’s remarks, Mr Musk called for more clarity regarding the reasons behind Mr Durov’s arrest.
