Manchester City striker Erling Haaland made headlines twice during Norway’s 3-0 victory against Slovenia on Thursday night, October 11.
The striker not only became Norway’s all-time leading scorer but also revealed that he and his girlfriend, Isabel Haugseng Johansen, are expecting their first child.
Haaland’s two goals in the match took his international tally to 34, surpassing the late Jørgen Juve’s record, which had stood for 87 years.
The 23-year-old accomplished the feat in just 36 appearances and also captained the national team for the first time during the match.
After the game, Haaland celebrated uniquely, tucking the match ball under his jersey and mimicking a baby gesture by putting his thumb in his mouth, signalling the exciting news.
He later posted the image on Instagram, accompanied by baby and “coming soon” emojis.
Haaland’s girlfriend, Johansen, who moved from Norway to Manchester to live with the footballer, has been a regular presence at his games and celebrations, including last season’s trophy triumphs with Manchester City.
Haaland said, “Of course, it is big and historic. I’m happy, and it’s a fantastic record to achieve… I have many years left. I’m enjoying myself.”
He also expressed pride in Norway’s performance, saying, “It was a well-executed match. I am proud. It’s a record that has stood for a long time… I felt good. It’s been a long time since I’ve had this much energy on the field.”
