The Edo State House of Assembly formally impeached its suspended Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, on Monday.
Although Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency I, had tendered his resignation on 17 August 2026, the Assembly subsequently altered his departure status. Eight days after the crisis began, lawmakers moved to replace the resignation with a formal impeachment order.
Following Agbebaku’s departure, Yekini Idaiye, the lawmaker representing Akoko-Edo I, was elected to lead the House.
The decision to escalate the penalty was initiated during last Monday’s plenary when Majority Leader Sunny Ojiezele presented the impeachment motion, which was seconded by Etsako Central representative Ahmed Waziri. According to Idaiye, 17 members signed the notice.
Idaiye clarified that the indefinite suspension was converted to impeachment because Agbebaku’s initial resignation notice was never officially presented or documented in the days following his suspension.
“This is to let the public know that the Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached the suspended Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku,” Idaiye stated, stating that the former leader did not voluntarily step down.
The House has instructed Agbebaku to surrender all official items. Idaiye cautioned that “security agencies would be engaged if the former Speaker fails to comply with the directive of the House.”
