The Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) has nominated Mai Martaba, a Hausa-language epic film, as Nigeria’s submission for the International Feature Film category in the upcoming 97th Academy Awards.

Directed and produced by Prince Daniel, the film delves into themes of power, love, greed, and betrayal, set within an ancient African kingdom, while highlighting the strength of female leadership.

According to a report by Channels TV on Wednesday, October 29, 2024, the NOSC praised Mai Martaba for its portrayal of inclusive leadership.

It also commended its visual and technical accomplishments, thereby selecting it for the Oscars’ entry to showcase diverse voices in global decision-making.

The selection process was led by NOSC chairperson Stephanie Linus and other notable members, including Victor Okhai, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Andy Amenechi, Yibo Koko, Izu Ojukwu, Emem Isong, Ali Nuhu, and Kene Okwuosa.

With the highest votes from the 15-member committee, Mai Martaba now awaits review by the Oscars’ IFF Executive Committee for the next stage.

Filmed in Daura, Katsina State, the film explores an ancient kingdom’s rise and fall, once flourishing from the Trans-Saharan trade until internal conflicts destabilised the powerful Agadashawa ruling clan.

Mai Martaba has already made waves, with screenings in Nigeria and a selection at the Septimius Awards in Amsterdam.

The 97th Oscars ceremony will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood, Los Angeles, on March 2, 2025, reaching over 200 territories worldwide.
