The Federal Government has officially launched a fleet of 100 electric buses under its Renewed Hope Mass Transit Programme, aimed at alleviating transport costs and enhancing the daily welfare of federal civil servants.
Unveiled on Wednesday at Eagle Square in Abuja, the initial rollout features 37 vehicles forming the first instalment of the approved 100-bus fleet. The project combines worker productivity, industrial policy, and clean energy technology, according to the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Senator John Owan Enoh.
Speaking at the event, the outgoing Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Didi Walson-Jack, framed the initiative as her “parting gift” to public servants less than 24 hours before the conclusion of her tenure.
“What we have here is 37 buses, being the first instalment of the 100 Electric Buses,” she said, emphasizing that accessible, reliable transit directly influences civil servants’ safety, finances, and output.
“For many Civil Servants, the daily commute shapes their finances, their safety, their punctuality, and ultimately their productivity,” Walson-Jack noted. She added that reduced commuting costs would allow staff to conserve funds, minimize travel risks, and arrive at their posts ready to deliver quality public service.
The vehicles will initially operate along selected pilot routes before expanding nationwide to Federal Secretariats across all states. To guarantee fleet maintenance and operational durability, Walson-Jack confirmed that “a Special Purpose Vehicle has been established to ensure their proper management, maintenance and long-term sustainability.”
Senator Enoh revealed that each bus holds up to 200 passengers and boasts a minimum range of 200 kilometres on a single charge. Enoh urged domestic automotive manufacturers to scale up factory investments and boost local components.
Director General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Olu Osanipin, confirmed on X that the remaining vehicles will be integrated gradually, with the full complement of 100 electric buses expected to be deployed by December 2026.
