The Federal Government has declared Thursday, 1 October 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The announcement was conveyed in an official statement released on Wednesday by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
Admonishing citizens to emulate the patriotism and dedication of the nation’s founding fathers, Tunji-Ojo stressed that enduring peace and stability remain vital pre-conditions for driving national growth. He extended congratulations to Nigerians living locally and in the diaspora, calling on the populace to use the anniversary as an opportunity to promote mutual respect, national cohesion, and peaceful living.
In the statement, the minister reflected on the resilience of the nation, saying: “As we celebrate 66th years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built”.
The interior minister assured the public that the government remains resolute in its duty to bolster internal security, safeguard citizens, and foster a stable climate where everyone can pursue their lawful ambitions without hindrance. He added that the administration will continue to advance a better standard of living for all Nigerians under its Renewed Hope Agenda.
