Governors elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC) banner have formally distanced themselves from cross-party political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting they will solely support official party candidates across all levels.
The resolution follows a late Monday night meeting in Abuja convened by the APC Governors’ Forum, where state executives declared they would reject any arrangement likely to spark internal confusion, divided loyalties, or competing interests.
While reading the communique issued after the gathering, the Chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, stressed that the group remained firmly dedicated to the ruling party’s established machinery.
“The APC Governors Forum unanimously resolved that its members will not participate in, support or endorse any alliance or political arrangement capable of undermining the re-election of Mr President, weakening the APC or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels,” Uzodimma stated.
He added, “In other words, the forum has no intention to support any candidate at any level that is not an APC candidate because our candidates who are contesting the election are being sponsored by our party. The governors’ campaign commitment is exclusively to all APC candidates. All levels of the party campaign architecture will align with the expectations of Mr President and the strategic objectives of the party.”
The collective stance comes as an apparent rebuttal to recent moves by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and Peoples Democratic Party leader, Nyesom Wike, who serves in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet. Wike has been championing a multi-party “Rainbow Coalition” in Rivers State and across other regions to back the President’s 2027 campaign.
Tensions have mounted between the minister and several state executives, with Wike claiming during a recent media briefing that Uzodimma and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq were secretly orchestrating opposition to his activities. Wike alleged that the governors were unsettled by his coalition’s expanding footprint, which offers a platform for politicians in the PDP seeking to challenge APC candidates in upcoming governorship and senatorial contests.
