Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has advocated for the ongoing rotation of the Nigerian presidency between northern and southern regions, calling on northern aspirants to hold off on their presidential ambitions until 2031.
According to a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, Governor Yusuf emphasised that presidential power should alternate between the two regions, granting each zone two consecutive terms. Allowing each region to complete a full two-term cycle, he explained, provides an administration with sufficient time to deliver on major policies and development projects.
Yusuf made the remarks on Sunday at the Government House in Kano while unveiling 50 vehicles donated by Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, to assist APC campaign mobilisation efforts across the state ahead of the 2027 polls.
The governor urged political stakeholders, particularly those in the North, to exercise patience and permit the existing political agreement to play out, effectively asking northern candidates to defer their aspirations until after the 2027 to 2031 presidential tenure.
Emphasising the need to back the current administration, Yusuf said, “I urge support for President Bola Tinubu to complete his second term because this would allow the South to complete its two-term cycle before power returns to the North.” He added, “We should allow the South to complete its two-term cycle. After that, power will return to the North in 2031.”
Yusuf maintained that a rotational presidency fosters national unity, fairness, mutual trust, and inclusion across all geopolitical zones, observing, “Rotational presidency is about fairness, equity and giving every part of the country a sense of belonging.”
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, the governor appealed to politicians and political parties to conduct peaceful, issue-focused campaigns, prioritising policy, vision, and developmental strategies over personal attacks and provocative statements. He urged, “Let us focus on issues, policies and programmes and avoid actions that can undermine peace and unity.”
Reiterating his administration’s dedication to peaceful political processes, Yusuf called on all political actors to elevate the peace, unity, and growth of Kano State and Nigeria above partisan interests.
