Senator Ireti Kingibe, the Labour Party (LP) lawmaker representing the Federal Capital Territory, has applauded the Supreme Court’s recent ruling affirming internal democracy and party autonomy.
According to BusinessDay, she also described it as a major step toward strengthening democratic institutions in the country.
In a statement released on Monday, Kingibe said the decision by the apex court was “a clear affirmation of the rule of law and a reinforcement of democratic values at a critical time in our party’s journey.”
She noted that the judgement has given the Labour Party a new chance to unite and reposition itself for future political success.
“The judgement provides the Labour Party with a much-needed opportunity to unite under purposeful and capable leadership,” she said.
Kingibe expressed confidence in the caretaker committee led by Senator Nenadi Usman, describing her as a stabilising force. “We trust in her proven capacity to warehouse and birth a new, forward-looking leadership that will guide the party with integrity, vision, and inclusivity,” she stated.
According to the FCT senator, this period marks a “pivotal moment to rebuild trust within the party, reestablish our structures, and lay the foundation for a stronger, more focused movement.”
She emphasised that the current leadership transition is an opportunity to reset the party’s course.
“Senator Usman’s leadership offers a unique opportunity to reset the party’s direction, grounded in transparency, unity, and the collective interest of our members and supporters,” Kingibe said.
One of the key issues Kingibe addressed was the role of the Obidient movement in shaping the future of the party. “Crucially, the integration of the Obidient movement into the Labour Party is not only welcome—it is essential,” she said, praising the movement’s energy and commitment.
“The passion, innovation, and commitment of the Obidient base reflect the democratic awakening of millions of Nigerians,” she added. “By embracing and institutionalising this movement, we will build a broader, more representative platform that speaks to the hopes of a new generation.”
Calling for unity among members, Kingibe urged party faithful to set aside differences and work together for the greater good.
She said, “I call on all members of the Labour Party, both old and new to come together in the spirit of renewal.
“Let us set aside divisions and focus on the shared mission of delivering good governance, social justice, and a better future for all Nigerians.
“Together, under capable leadership and guided by the principles of democracy and the rule of law, we will move forward, stronger and more united than ever.”
