African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Dele Momodu has thrown his weight behind Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party for a second term in Osun State, calling on all opposition groups to unite behind the incumbent ahead of the 15 August governorship election.
Despite remaining a member of the ADC, the former presidential aspirant urged rival parties to adopt a pragmatic strategy to prevent the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from taking the state.
While describing Osun as having been turned into a “theater of war” by the APC, Momodu insisted that backing Adeleke was the only sensible path forward, warning that fragmented opposition votes would merely supply the ruling party with “an easy alibi to rig the Osun gubernatorial election on August 15, 2026.”
High praise was lavished on the governor’s record in office, with Momodu declaring that his endorsement was rooted in performance rather than personal ties. He described Adeleke as a global phenomenon capable of defeating President Bola Tinubu in a popularity contest, framing him as “primus inter pares” among Nigerian governors due to his achievements across infrastructure, education, healthcare, and civil service welfare.
Reflecting on his own political trajectory, Momodu explained that he originally joined the ADC to help forge a broad opposition front against what he termed the “APC cankerworm.”
Although he had fervently hoped to avoid a clash of political egos and build upon the coalition’s initial momentum, he conceded that the alliance failed to materialise as planned. Nonetheless, he expressed continued optimism that voters would ultimately rise up against the ruling party.
