Political campaign efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections have been intensified by backers of presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso. The joint ticket operates under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), backed by a broader network comprising members of both the Obidient and Kwankwasiyya movements. To bolster their push across the country, the combined support group recently established a 59-member presidential campaign council made up of regional directors and coordinators.
However, a political gathering in Warri, Delta State, ended in chaos after suspected thugs allegedly disrupted a rally held by supporters of the NDC candidates. The disruption was first made public on social media platform X by Esther Umoh, a photographer linked to Obi, who reported that politically motivated thugs had targeted the campaign team.
According to Umoh, the assailants targeted those traveling with the Delta State governorship candidate, alongside activists belonging to the Obidient and Kwankwasiyya movements who were out canvassing in the locality.
Writing on X, she stated: “As of this morning, politically sponsored thugs reportedly opened fire on @MamaPee__, @Drmopaul, @dchrisiyovwaye, the Delta State governorship candidate, members of his entourage, and other Obidient and Kwankwasiya supporters who were out campaigning in Warri,”.
Footage accompanying the claims depicted a scene of unrest, with an unidentified individual stating in the recording: “Look at the thŭgs, they came to attack us. We must face them. We are fully ready for them.”
