The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, as a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
This announcement was made in a statement issued on Sunday and signed by Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior.
According to the statement, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government.
He congratulated Nigerians on the commemoration of 26 years of unbroken democratic governance in the country.
“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign, peace is sustained, and our future assured,” Tunji-Ojo said.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey since 1999, the Minister described the past 26 years as a testament to the nation’s resilience, strength, and courage.
He noted that the period had renewed national hope and reinforced the people’s commitment to a democratic ideal.
He emphasised that democracy is a continuous process that thrives on openness and the pursuit of improvement.
The Minister further reaffirmed the dedication of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope administration to upholding the core values of democracy, including the freely expressed will of the people in shaping the nation’s political, economic, social, and cultural development.
Democracy Day, now officially observed on June 12, was moved from May 29 in 2018 to honour the historic 1993 presidential election, widely believed to have been won by Moshood Abiola, but annulled by the military regime of the time.
The Minister called on Nigerians to reflect on the significance of the day and remain committed to nation-building, unity, and the preservation of democratic ideals.
